The Thinking Lab - All About Emotions #5: Gratitude and Anger: Embracing Allies and Distancing Enemies - for Members
August 8, 2023 –
Topic: All About Emotions #5: Gratitude and Anger: Embracing Allies and Distancing Enemies
To deal with other people rationally and form strong, reliable allies, you both need to maintain your independent judgment and to treat other people as they deserve. The emotions in the anger/gratitude family help alert you when these values are at stake. They also are easily "read" by other people, making them the trigger for many misunderstandings if they are based on distortions.
In this class we will discuss:
- Other people as values or potential values
- An individualist perspective on allies and enemies
- The need to distinguish anger and hostility
- How gratitude can get muddled by secondhandedness
- How to get emotional distance from people who have harmed you
Optional Preparation: You might want to do the Judge Your Neighbor exercise as an in-depth introduction to this topic. [Link to the library page: https://www.thinkingdirections.com/thinking_lab/judge-your-neighbor/ ]
