Topic: All About Emotions #6: Judging Yourself: How to Process Guilt and Stimulate Pride
In our survey of the basic families of emotions, we will move on to the two emotions that concern your own moral assessment of yourself: guilt and pride. Like all other emotions, these need to be treated as alerts to values that appear to be relevant in the moment. They need to be introspected to identify evaluations implicit in the emotions. These evaluations then need to be judged, since you cannot assume they are true, important, and/or relevant.
In this class we will discuss:
- The life and death difference between earned guilt and unearned guilt
- What it means to forgive yourself (and how and when to do it)
- How properly dealing with guilt embodies the virtue of pride and triggers the emotion of pride (and the difference between those two concepts)
