Topic: All About Emotions #11: The Role of Deep Rational Values in Introspecting Emotions
For human beings, emotions are best viewed as alerts to values at stake, not motivators of action per se. As a volitional being, you choose the values that motivate your action; you are not at the mercy of any emotion you happen to feel.
But to identify those values accurately and rationally, you often need multiple steps of introspection and logical analysis. You need to let yourself feel unpleasant emotions, and keep working at it to reveal value information that had never been fully conceptualized or that had been repressed. A critical tool to simplify this process is the list of deep rational values (DRVs).In this class, we will review:
- What deep rational values are
- Why DRVs make it easier to introspect complex or puzzling emotions
- Why it's worth memorizing a list of DRVs
You will need the
OFNR Quick Reference Sheet.
Optional Prep Work: Go through the list of DRVs in the table, and decide for yourself whether you agree they belong on the list. Raise the controversial cases in class discussion.
