Towards Zero is my favorite Agatha Christie novel. I have read them all, numerous times, so obviously it isn’t exactly a “who dun it” for me. I know who dun it, and why. But what I love about this book is that it is totally character-driven.
Unfortunately, I can’t go into any details, because if you haven’t read it, I would spoil the plot for you. (And I would be sentenced to a lifetime sitting in front of the fire watching Miss Marple knit.) Incidentally, neither of the main Christie detectives, Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple, is in this book. It is a stand-alone.
So what can I say that will induce you to read it? It is the arc of the story, the longest I know of. The arc leads from almost the beginning to the very end. As in most Agatha Christies, everything is important. Every word, thought, gesture . . . everything. You have to be in focus to read it.
You learn about the characters, one in particular, near the very beginning. And what you learn about this character leads to a truly shocking solution of the mystery. The shock is not finding out who did it; it is what the character did to solve it. And it would not be shocking except for what you know about this character.

Towards Zero
Is there a movie version? Sounds interesting. Sometimes I watch David Suchet as Poirot, intending only a few minutes, but then it draws me in.

There’s a new one out a few years back by the British conservative government, a very scary horror:
Towards Net Zero

The film you describe is not an Agatha Christie novel.

I love Agatha Christie and have read all of her novels at least twice (except for Postern of Fate, which I read only once). Towards Zero is not one of those that immediately comes to mind (I have that with a number of her titles), but I’ll read it again first chance I get.

A couple of her later ones are like pastiches. Not really prime.

Can you recommend other of your Christie favorites? And other favorite novels?

Here is a list of Agatha Christie’s favorites:
Towards Zero
Endless Night
Crooked House
Ordeal by Innocence
The Moving Finger
I agree with all of them, and at this level it is hard to rank them; they are all wonderful. Endless Night, apparently her first choice, is the most unusual, but it is very dark.
These should keep you busy.

Thanks for the recommendation, Cynthia. I am currently reading the book you recommend and enjoying it. I had been in need of a pleasurable distraction from a stressful, work-related situation. This fits the bill nicely!

Thanks, Cynthia, for this recommendation (and the others, as well). I’m 60% through, anxious to find out who did it, but forcing myself to absorb every detail so I can make a good guess.
Very enjoyable!
