  I consider Saint-Saëns’ Organ Symphony the apex of the symphonic form (although Rachmaninov went beyond anything from the 19th century in his concertos, the symphony is a different form). Here is an astounding performance from an organist I first heard a week ago, and a conductor whom I first heard in this recording:

  We first heard this in Ann Arbor, at Hill Auditorium, with Ormandy and the Philadelphia. I don’t remember who the organist was. Hill did not have an organ like that. This was early – middle 70s, a May Festival concert. We were poor then and went poorer for a few weeks to get May Festival tickets. This performance brings back memories.

  This performance is both a pleasure to hear and to watch.
