I just readĀ a riveting new crime thriller called Natchez Burning. It’s about a mayor, his newspaper publisher wife and a determined reporter who are trying to uncover a series of gruesome murdersĀ of black peopleĀ in the 1960’s. Some of the culprits are still around today, and they’llĀ do anything to keep their ugly secrets hidden. The author, Greg Iles, was born and bred in Mississippi and knows the place inside and out. Everything in this book rings true. At over 750 pages,Ā Natchez Burning is long for a thriller, butĀ the plot is so gripping that it kept me up night after night burning the midnight oil. Ā

Based on a true story, like In Cold Blood?

The author explains in the afterword that he based the story on on some murders that took place in Mississippi in the 60’s, but he fictionalized them to some degree. It sure seems realistic. That’s how the author gets you to swallow the slightly preposterous elements that makes it a thriller, not a case study.
