After much thought I felt this movie warranted a mention on here, although it willĀ probably only appeal to fellow fans of comics/graphic novelsĀ and those who liked movies such as Kick Ass, X-Men, BondĀ and Team America.Ā
Don’t be put off byĀ theĀ official blurb: āA super-secret organization recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agencyās ultra-competitive training program just as a dire global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.ā
The ‘twisted tech genius’Ā Valentine (Samuel L Jackson) is notĀ vilified for being a tech genius.Ā Hopefully not plot-spoiling here but Valentine is an eco-villain and his creed is “Mankind is the virus, and I’m the cure.”
Cue great action and fight scenes, Colin Firth andĀ Michael Caine being charming as ever, Samuel L Jackson being annoying as ever, andĀ a gloriously bloody climax which will surprise and delight you.
Plus what’s not to like about dialogue like this:
Galahad: Did you see the film Trading Places?
Eggsy: No.
Galahad: How about Nikita? Pretty Woman? All right, my point is, that the lack of a silver spoon has set you on a certain path but you neednāt stay on it. If youāre prepared to adapt and learn, you can transform.
Eggsy: Oh, like in My Fair Lady.
Galahad: Youāre full of surprises.

I recently saw Kingsman: The Secret ServiceĀ and didn’t really find it as enjoyable as Yohanna Weber did (#3982). I found it a bit mocking of heroic spy movies but it was redeemed by its portrayal of a villainous environmentalist who believes in the evil of human “overpopulation” — which is an improvement over who Hollywood usually makes the villain.Ā

Amesh:
I have seen quite a few Hollywood movies where the villain is an environmentalist of such stripes, but it is such a trope now that I can’t really remember each of the movies by name, unfortunately.
