I recently saw the movie Spotlight and highly recommend it.

Spotlight is the story of the team of Boston Globe journalists that, in 2002, broke the story of the Catholic Church’s official “policy” regarding child-molesting priests. The movie also details the church’s tactics of intimidation and political cronyism it usedĀ to kill the story and keep the larger truth from becoming widely known.Ā

The movie is well acted and suspenseful. The protagonists are all admirable, heroic, and intransigent in their pursuit of the truth.

The most striking aspect, to me, was how the church’s actions in Boston and Massachussets were tantamount to theocracy as canon “law” basically reigned supreme. The fealty paid to the church by the populace and the local and state government was astonishing.

At the end of the film, the audience erupted in applause which I took to be reflective of the value the audience placed on justice ultimately prevailing.

I agree wholeheartedly with Amesh’s recommendation and urge everyone to see this movie. The repercussions of The Globe’s exposĆ© circled, well, the globe. During the credits, there was a list of hundreds of cities where the official cover-up of priest’s pedophiliaĀ was revealed. It’s truly breathtaking.

See this movie for the dramatization, the acting and for the sweeping scope of the corruption of that bastion of morality.

I have to say that this type of movie is an example of one of the most subtle forms of leftist bias.

Without seeing the movie, I say I believe the story, think its important, and have no problem with these positive reviews.

But, looking at the full context, we are still being propagandized: we get a mainstreamĀ documentary on how corrupt the Catholic church is, but the mainstream will not permit a corresponding documentary about leftist bias in the press, the corruption of, say, Jesse Jackson’s organization, our graduate schools, “climate change” silliness, etc.

So watch a documentary like this, learn from it, but never forget that you are still being propagandized, even when you are being told an important truth. The devil does not always lie – but even when he tells the truth, he lies.

      It’s not a documentary.

I do not understand how Catholic priests can be child molesters. I don’t understand the psychology. How can they do it? Presumably, it violates their religious belief system. It must be a mortal sin. They’re Catholic priests for God’s sake! (pun intended) It seems impossible their behavior involves some kind of giant rationalization. Can they believe that because of Original Sin they can’t help themselves? And thus will be forgiven in confession? I can understand a few sociopathic priests but it makes no sense that it’s so endemic in the Church.

Incidentally, if you want to see a dramatization of the dark side of Christianity watch about the first third of the movie version of “Jane Eyre.” It shows Jane’s upbringing. I regard her as heroically independent not to have been destroyed by it. Excellent movie. I recommend the 1944 film with Joan Fontaine and Orson Welles and with the excellent Henry Daniell as the villainous school headmaster.

      http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2003/11/30/in_death_geoghan_triggers_another_crisis/?page=full

In death, something new had been added to Geoghan’s epitaph: The cruel, rapacious abuser, the centerpiece of the clergy sexual abuse crisis in Boston, had become a kind of victim. An inmate with a bull’s-eye on his back, he was failed by an institution that bungled its basic duty to keep him safe.

Thanks to Amesh for recommending Spotlight. It deserves the Best Picture Oscar that it won. Mark Ruffalo’s performance was especially compelling.
