Several months ago Brian Cross and Roger Zimmerman both recommended the movie Chef. It finally came up on my Netflix queue and after watching it I agree with their recommendation completely.

The movie is very benevolent and its theme revolves around the happiness that results from pursuing, and achieving, one’s values and how that redounds on one’s entire life–even if one has to start from scratch (the movie’s tagline is “Starting from scratch never tasted so good”).

I fully agree, having seen this a few months ago myself. A couple of years ago a deli in the shopping center where my office was located for over a decade went out of business. I knew the owner a bit and had watched his painful slide for about 5 years, and had spoken with him about some ideas to pick up business. His response was to throw up his hands and say, “But I’m doing the same things I’ve always been doing!” He had started there in 1990, and many things had changed in that time that were challenging, but also new opportunities existed. He only saw the former, none of the latter. In the film Chef, the chef in question does much the same as this former deli owner, and then takes it to the extreme. But unlike this other fellow, he does face the reality of the need to change, as well as realizing that the “fire” that had once made him a great chef is still there, if only he will now rekindle it. A good film.

I also liked this movie. It was very benevolent universe. There really were no villains, just a restaurant owner who was mistaken, not evil. It had some very insightful things to say about the relationship between father and son, that sure looked like they were based on real-world experience.

Of course, due to the concrete setting, the movie is a two hour celebration of food. You might want to brace yourself before watching it if you’re on a diet.
