For fans of period pieces, this is one to see. I know nothing of Thomas Hardy’s work, so I was braced for something tragic, but this film caught me by surprise. Carey Mulligan is excellent and I found myself emotionally “caught off guard” at the end (in a good way). A very romantic and visually stunning film.

Based on this recommendation by Thomas Reardon I saw Far from the Madding Crowd tonight and enjoyed it. I also found Carey Mulligan to be very good in the movie as she portrayed the independent-minded main character. I also really enjoyed the quiet persistence and dedication to values exemplified by the character of Gabriel Oak.

FYI, this is available now for rent on iTunes for those considering weekend entertainment. I watched it again last week and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Bathsheba’s spirited independence is refreshing, and Gabriel Oak exemplifies a man of integrity whose hard work allows him to rise and win. A beautiful film.

I rented this movie on Amazon a few nights ago, and I had mixed feelings. I agree with Mr. Reardon that the film was visually stunning, and I agree with Dr. Adalja and Mr. Reardon’s assessment of Gabriel Oak, but it seemed Bathsheba’s character was a mixture of independent and indecisive, brilliant and short-sighted, sure of herself and confused. I thought her performance was beautiful, and I thought the film was an enjoyable experience, but I thought her character’s motivations in the context of the story could have been made more consistent without altering the script too much.
I’d recommend it, but I just don’t think her character consistently exemplified a Dagny or a Kira.
