      City of Ember (2008)

A children’s adventure, but enjoyable for an adult as well. Comparable to, but better in many ways than (IMO), The Incredibles and Ratatouille. The themes in the movie are all implicit, nothing is said explicitly. I would normally call this a shortfall but seeing as how it is for kids, this is appropriate. The actions and choices of the main characters are consistent with a benevolent sense of life and this is what, most importantly, shines through.

      Themes touched on:
The “I” vs the “We” / Independence
      Reason vs Faith
Ambition vs Complacency (no desire to achieve more or even to contemplate it)
      Questioning “authority”
      Self-Motivation / Self-Starting

In addition, the movie was well directed, well acted, and creates a very unique atmosphere with its set.

I give the movie a 9/10 because the movie ignores the source of wealth (the creative mind).

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Now you be the judge! http://ow.ly/b1Be9

      Hello Conrad,

I too like the film City of Ember. I like the cheerful benevolent sense of life of the youth heroine, and the self–confidence and ingenuity of the youth hero.

The film, however, propagates the now common anti–man notion that man is a threat to the natural world and to himself, and that destruction will result in his manipulating the natural world. This, in fact, is the backstory. It is why the populace live underground: they are fugitives from the world above, which man has polluted for mankind’s habitation.

I am eager to hear any thoughts. I love discussing stories.
