For those of you who like climbing documentaries, or just enjoy the feeling of awe when someone does the impossible, I highly recommend The Alpinist. This profile of Canadian climber Marc-André Leclerc has plenty of squirm-inducing climbing footage, but is also a vivid example of what it means to live solely for one’s own passion. I also enjoyed the commentary from the older alpine climbers, and how his mother encouraged him to find his passion and then go all in. Streaming now.

I just watched this over the weekend, and I walked away with mixed feelings. I had a stronger positive reaction to Free Solo, I suspect because my sense was that Alex Honnold engages in thoughtful risk-taking. Marc-André Leclerc, by contrast, did some amazing things but seemed reckless. That made it hard to become emotionally invested in him the way I was with Honnold or, even more so, Tommy Caldwell in The Dawn Wall
