A couple of years ago Chuck Salvi recommended the miniseries Pillars of the Earth. I added it to my (long) Netflix queue back then. It finally arrived last week and I had the chance to watch it.

The miniseries is based on Ken Follett’s novel depicting the construction of a cathedral in medieval England during “The Anarchy”. I think it probably anticipates Game of Thrones with some of its gore and setting (Follett’s novel was published prior to the novel series Game of Thrones is based upon).

In his post, Mr. Salvi wrote of the theme being centered on the consequences of compromising with evil. Another additional sub-theme that is evident is the Atilla/Witchdoctor alliance. Throughout the miniseries, the Church (in the form of a bishop) is behind—and gives sanction to and forgiveness for–all the evil machinations of the royals and nobility to murder each other.

I recommend it as well, especially for the Atilla/Witchdoctor concretization.

This is a faithful adaptation of an excellent book, which still sells over 100,000 copies a year in the U.S. more than 25 years after its initial publication. The sequel, World Without End, is almost as good. Follett, the author of Eye of the Needle, did an entertaining talk on the history of suspense novels, which you can see on his web site. http://ken-follett.com/suspense/
