Pursuits of Wisdom: Six Ways of Life in Ancient Philosophy from Socrates to Plotinus

This 2002 book by John Cooper is a study of philosophy as a way of and guide to life, not an academic, technical study for specialists. As Peikoff said in the OPAR preface, philosophy is for humans. Cooper likes ancient philosophy, with books on Aristotle, Plato and Stoicism, etc. Most Amazon reviewers say this book is academically turgid, not for popular audiences and very poorly edited. But the online first chapter is, so far, clearly written. He seems a part of the recent return to reason in philosophy noted by HB. And Amazon has quite a few new books on ancient philosophy, including Aristotle.
