We are all well aware of what happens when the government gets involved in science.

This book tells the story of what happened when the government got involved in the science of nutrition. It didn’t just affect the Food pyramid recommendations it also affected academia, journalist, and authors.

She discusses the history of then USA dietary guidelines and exposes the faulty studies and cult like personalities that have led to harmful recommendations.

The author writes about how fear of heart disease and other illnesses led to incorrect dietary recommendations like lowering overall fat intake and not eating red meat. Which in turn led to an increase in sugars and carbohydrates in our diets.

Scientist who disagreed with the consensus were shunned and ignored much like they are today on the topic of global warming.

The author claims to have spent 9 years researching this and she writes in a way that is accessible to the layman.  Although she covers a lot of nutrition science the book still reads like a thriller.

I listened to the book on audio and recommend you do the same. However i think you can get the main points by just watching her Ted talk (http://youtu.be/1CHGiid6N9Q) or reading some of the numerous interviews that pop up when you google her name which is Nina Teicholz.
