This 1979 movie should by all rights be in everyone’s mental list of the great movies of all time. Ā I can’t do better than Roger Ebert’s description:
The first half of “The Black Stallion” is so gloriously breathtaking that the second half, the half with all the conventional excitement, seems merely routine. We’ve seen the second half before ā the story of the kid, the horse, the veteran trainer, and the big race. But the first hour of this movie belongs among the great filmgoing experiences. It is described as an epic, and earns the description.

On a personal note, we watched this again yesterday. Ā It was brought to mind because a property we have had for sale, adjacent to our own, has been bought — for a horse! Ā The buyers may or may not build a house on it, after a few years. Ā But they are basically buying a five-acre lot for their horse. Ā
