Christian Bale stars as the titular character in this esthetically impressive and very well acted thriller. The film focuses on a life that has become hell on Earth for an ordinarily decent man who chooses to evade reality in the gravest of ways.
The tone is grim and nightmarish throughout, until the very end when the apocalyptic threat of nihilism is betrayed by a glimmer of the redemption that rationality can deliver.
